Imagine and believe

Imagine and Believe was painted to the Breathe, Glorious Noise and Duet albums by Midge. There was tremendous energy flowing from the music so hopefully some of that has flowed through into the artwork. In different ways and on different levels both Muses influenced this one. Great when that happens!

The size mounted is 10" x 8". It's painted on heavyweight 425gsm paper in mixed media ie watercolours, acrylics and ink.

The stone circle is based on Castlerigg in Cumbria.Its around two decades ago since we were there but it's one of those places you don't forget. Very peaceful and quiet as if the circle was sleeping ....but in that peace, that isolation one can focus on sending out positive energy...

Incidentally the 'sky' started off rather differently but didn't work as it distracted from the focus so out came a mix of heavy body acrylics ..prussian blue, deep violet & a smidgeon of purple and as it was never meant to look realistic anyway some texture crept in too....to loosely give the effect of focusing on the world through a kind of doorway that's opened up......

Some are based on fading photographs of work long gone but they still give a glimpse into my creative and very colourful 'roots'. The influence of my other muse is very evident. A tremendous inspiration on all levels.

'Believe, Imagine, Believe' (working title) is one of the positive energy paintings triggered a week or so back. As you can see it's still a work in progress but getting there. You may recognise the stone circle as Castlerigg in the Lake District.

Lots of inspiration from Midge again yesterday. The music is weaving it's magic again! Ten rough sketches in the small wee hours and they're still coming! Going to be pretty busy in the weeks ahead methinks. Here's another work in progress in the initial stages.....the painted area beneath the roots is loosely based on random standing stones from Callanish.

Tree of Light

Finished this today but couldn't get the camera to pick up the touch of iridescence on the tree. Think I called it luminescent medium in yesterday's blog...no idea why as it's iridescent medium! Often trees in my paintings are at least loosely based on trees I've encountered and photographed. This one along with most of the ones to come are totally imaginary as I'm sure you can tell! ;-) Deliberately with no attempt at realism whatsoever.......

A small CD size one in watercolours, acrylics and ink. One can't tell from the photo but the white tree has a touch of luminescent medium to give it some luminosity. Working title is 'Tree of Light'. Still a work in progress as still thinking about the surrounding background.....

As already blogged the focus for some new artworks will be on projecting positive vibes and energy out there so hopefully 'The energies are weaving....' reflects that in some small way. Inspired by Midge and painted to a mix of his solo/Ultravox music then finished to Paul Simon's 'Graceland' album it uses mixed media ie watercolours and acrylics on 425gsm paper.

Many, many  years ago I was offered an exhibition in Scotland on the strength of the positive energy that had been picked up in my work. I was asked to produce more work. Work that would put a little 'light' into the world and help counteract the 'darkness' that was out there. Their words not mine.

It seems to me that  this sad, mad, bad world needs a bit more positivity,  more light so the focus for much of the new art is going to be on projecting positive vibes and energy out there in my hope for a better world. To do that I'm going to be  using a lot of vibrant colour, standing stones as focal points and of  course music will be very much part of the equation.

It seems that my Muse and his music is going to be responsible for another series of paintings featuring Callanish given all the ideas that were triggered last night so as things are still in the very early stages of sketching stuff out I decided to scan in and upload one or two of our photos of the 'old men' instead. They were taken on a very wild and wet day way, way back and have faded a bit over the years which is a shame because they had a tremendous otherworldly ambience about them originally.

Incidentally the new standing stones work will be very different to the ambient mood art. More surreal and full of colour.

Digital artwork based on 'One world, one vision', a watercolour and gouache painting from two decades ago. Some of it's colours faded in the northern UV rays so I've played around with it to give it a digital makeover. Inspired by the Queen song 'One Vision',the title came from a lyric. Incidentally it was one of the first of my paintings to feature the world map.....

The ninth in the Breathe series is finally finished! Hopefully it works! Watercolours and acrylics on heavyweight paper. Umpteen attempts to get an accurate image but the light reflects off the tree every time so looks like this is as good as it's going to get!

What was I thinking?

Having acquired a very large box edge canvas from a charity shop some weeks ago I'd tried to ignore it as filling such a large canvas is daunting when you normally work on a considerably smaller scale. Yesterday finally unwrapped it. Loads of paint and music later I had a background....a very hot pink mix and I thought I knew where it was going .....errr no! The next stage was a painting disaster. One of those things one really shouldn't have started! Couldn't be binned as it'd not fit in the wheelie bin so mixed more paint and started again. Here's a studio shot of the stage it's at now. Long way to go as yet.......

A digital take on the latest loose abstract followed by a slightly unfocused image of the original painting. This started life as a spiral on the blue/purple/magenta/violet spectrum just going with music. The next stage was done whilst feeling rough and somewhat 'muzzy' hence the title 'fuzzy logic'. The medium is acrylics on 8" x 8" box edge canvas and it's still a work in progress.....

The finished result from playing a diverse mix of music from Michael Jackson, The Killers, Ultravox, Midge, Travis, Bowie, Queen, Eurythmics and others. An experiment with the music, with textures and medium as well as rather more abstract than usual. A challenge that took me out of the comfort zone! The jury is still out on whether it works! Much harder working with a mix of music than it is with just Midge/Ultravox music where things flow more naturally. Not sure I'll be repeating such rough, loose abstracts very often or trying to work to such a mix again as one minute you're going deep, the next you're moving around to it ...harder to focus and one or two songs had to be removed from the equation as they struck a discordant note. Interesting experiment though.

Mixing the music

A couple of days ago I blogged about the challenge I'd set myself to integrate more of the other music that moves me into my art. Realizing just how different and challenging it's going to be. Inspiration from Midge just comes out of nowhere ....as it did yesterday with Cry (Midge Ure with Mick Karn, Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen) playing in my head over and over with an image of a painting to do.

If it's anyone else's music I have to consciously think I'd like to do something based on a particular song and then start trying to come up with ideas on how to do it. I've got as far as starting a list of ones I'd like to try. It's very apparent that it's mostly only going to be songs that have something more to say, that touch my soul on more than more level. A very eclectic range of music to choose from but so far only songs from Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Enya are definite contenders. Possibles are ones from Bowie, The Killers, Travis, Queen, Enigma and Pink Floyd. It could be just the title of a song or a lyric that triggers a painting but where it comes from doesn't really matter just so long as I can give a nod to some of those other great songwriters!

Yesterday after wrecking a mixed media 'Unfinished Song' painting, which worked until it got tinkered with, I started another with no pre conceived ideas in mind other than to do something very abstract and to see what, if anything, would come from playing a mix of music from Michael Jackson, The Killers, Ultravox, Midge, Travis, Bowie and others. An experiment in more ways than one. Experimenting not just with the music mix but also with textures. It's far easier to work when Midge's stuff was playing ...there's a surprise! Not! ;-) Tend to want to move about to MJ! It's still very much a work in progress and the jury is out on whether it's worth finishing. Going to bravely share a shot of 'Mix' at it's present stage! Music is such a positive force in the world. As Longfellow said 'Music is the universal language of mankind.' It transcends all boundaries. And for some of us it’s not only ‘soul food’ but also an amazing memory bank. A kind of soundtrack to our lives. One can hear a song one hasn’t heard in decades, almost forgotten about and yet it can unleash so many memories. Most of my ‘moments in time’ are integrated with music in some way. Songs are so powerfully emotive...

The Song

It’s no secret that much of my work in recent years has been inspired by and painted to Midge/Ultravox's music. Midge re opened that creative doorway after a very bleak period. But its not just his music that opens that creative and inspirational doorway its the man himself, his warmth and compassion, his humanity. My Muse! This was one of the first to come from that ...virtually a collaboration between two very special men! ;-)

The Long Walk

As my muse, Midge continues to inspire in ways that no one else can but there are other influences that have made me who I am and are all part of the creative melting pot. Some of them are obvious in my art! Callanish & other standing stones for example. A challenge that has been fermenting away for a while is to integrate more of the other music that moves me, that I love into my artwork. Very occasionally it does happen! But not often enough! Here's one inspired by Michael Jackson....

Sound of Waves

I find that artwork that comes from other music has to be more consciously considered and planned rather than just flowing from going deep within it (as with Midge/Ultravox) so it's going to be challenging. It may be more likely to be mixed influences such as this next one which was inspired by both Midge and John Lennon...

Imagine

Given the diversity of my tastes which cover a broad spectrum from rock, pop, folk, prog rock, alternative, blues, indie, celtic, synth, electro pop, new age, world music to opera and classical the results could be interesting. It may work, it may not but it'll be fun to try and if I succeed could be very useful 'disciplining' for future projects and commissions. One abstract that 'flowed' was inspired by a collaboration between Mick Karn and Midge ...

Textures

I've always been able to lose myself in music and use it in whatever way was needed. As a child of the 60s with an early ‘political’ awareness and inspired by men such as Martin Luther King it was perhaps inevitable that I’d be drawn to protest songs and the likes of Bob Dylan and others. These influences triggered many poems. A decade or so down the line I found myself writing song lyrics many of them protest songs ...so it' seems like a natural progression that many years later I should be using that 'voice' in pictures inspired by my Muse and his music and what better examples than the next two. The first was inspired by Live 8 and the Make Poverty History campaign. The second is a good example of how one can use one's voice through art. The original was presented to No 10 by our MP as part of the campaign.

The World Can't Wait

David Bowie and Queen were major influences in the 70s (with others) and then along came the 80s. A brilliant decade for music! Ultravox ...amazing, innovative ...no need to say more! Eurythmics. Michael Jackson ... absolute genius! Queen's brilliance undiminished. U2. Far too many to mention more than a few as the 80s produced so much fantastic music. But the most influential song of all was of course 'Do they know it's Christmas' and triggered the first artwork in the aftermath......a simple collage....

Why?

That song, the Michael Buerck footage, Live Aid all had a profound impact on my way of thinking that was to stay with me through the decades inspiring me greatly. Here’s one inspired by that song...

Imagine the Power of the Song

Within a year or two of the 'Why?' collage I started painting what others termed soul paintings. One of the very earliest paintings to be directly inspired by music came from Queen's 'One Vision' but was the exception in those early years.

One World, One Vision

Prior to 2003 although I often painted to a backdrop of new age music or such as Mike Oldfield, Enigma, Ravi Shankar, Jean Michel Jarre or Mozart it didn't really influence my art in any way. There was a huge divide between music for pleasure and music for working as I found most vocals too intrusive to work to but that was because the paintings were virtually a form of active meditation that I could get lost in. The art was inspired by my other Muse, my soulmate and by dreams rather than by the music itself. One example of that is the next one....


The Paradigm Tree

There is an incredible energy in live music and I've been lucky enough to go to some amazing gigs and see some of the very best! The roll call includes Queen, Ultravox, Midge, Travis, Rolling Stones, Curved Air, Hot Chocolate, Billy Ocean, INXS, The Alarm, Big Country, Status Quo, Manfred Mann, Jethro Tull, Loyko, The Chieftains, Capercaillie, Dougie Maclean, Howard Jones and many others. Lots more on the wishlist! The most inspirational gigs have of course been the Midge and Ultravox ones which triggered many, many paintings .... the energy from their live gigs also comes through on the recordings of them ...great for working to! It's soul music of the highest order! And just in case anyone doesn't know ... Midge is not only a brilliant solo musician/singer/songwriter but also the frontman/singer/lead guitarist of the mighty Ultravox .... double the 'soul food'!!! ;-)

A wee taste of the Highlands

There are some places that touch your soul in ways that nowhere else can. For me that's the Scottish Highlands, my spiritual home. The most beautiful place on earth! So thought I'd share a few pics of places I love and that have inspired or influenced me in some way.

The first few were taken in a nearby forest in the Highlands where I enjoyed many great walks accompanied only by my music. Very energizing!

The next three are of some amazing Highland sunsets. Those familiar with my artwork will have noticed that I like silhouettes! So these sunsets are in keeping...

The next one is also from the Scottish Highlands taken during a lovely autumn day's walk in a favourite place. There was an absolutely magical ambience. That combined with Midge Ure's music which I was listening to on the MP3 player created some amazing creative energy ... an effect that was magnified immensely by seeing Midge at a gig in Rotherham the next day! Loads of paintings were inspired! Oh and these trees appear in various paintings.

Abstracts trilogy

It started with a song called 'Become' and with no pre conceived ideas other than just to flow with Midge's music and see where he led me. I ended up with three of the most abstracts paintings I've done. Fun to do but a one off. Normal service will be resumed shortly! ;-)

Medium: acrylics on deep edge canvas (5" x 5"). Edges need work but otherwise done. Going with The 'Become' trilogy as a title after all ...apt given the music and symbology of the spiral. Always trust one's first instincts. These images need resizing but for some reason I can't access photobucket today and photoshop won't let me resize either!

Soul Music III

Here's Soul Music III, the first finished artwork to come from  seeing Midge, my Muse  recently for some much needed soul food. It's another in the 'Soul  Music' series and has been painted to a backdrop of wall to wall Midge  solo music. A mixed media collage on  board using watercolours, acrylics  and ink.  Others are in the pipeline. It was impossible to capture the vibrancy and irridescence of the colours on the original with a camera but hopefully these images give some idea.

Still deciding which of the two crops is best and whether any more tinkering is needed. And here's a shot of how it looked before the background was changed......in two minds as to whether I should have left well alone!

With a deadline fast approaching for the submission of six pieces of art it's been frustrating to have had several painting disasters that have meant starting all over again. Despite often working relatively small creating art that works on this CD size was harder than I'd expected! Finally getting there though! Anyhow here are two of them. Provisional titles are Breathe VI for the one above and for the one below Song....both mixed media using watercolours, ink and acrylics.

Another Africa based painting in the 'Voice' series. Painted mostly to a mix of Midge solo music but completed to Ultravox's 'Rage in Eden' album. It's important that this painting speaks for itself not have it's story told in words! Hence the title being a kind of dedication ie For 'those who know' which comes from a lyric to 'The Thin Wall'. Medium: watercolours, acrylics and ink on watercolour board.

Various elements conspired to inspire this one and though the digital image has muted down the colours and vibrancy hopefully the concept of my 'soul music' works! For anyone who doesn't know the music that inspires my work ... the title doesn't relate to a music genre! Painted to Midge's 'Breathe' and 'Glorious Noise' albums ..... very Muse influenced! Good to be getting back on track after a low period but a way to go as yet ...

And then there were three! Here's 'Breathe III' ......

When I first got involved in the Trees for Life project it was to do just one painting. I love Scotland and I love trees so a project to raise funds to help replenish the Caledonian forest was right up my street. What I hadn't anticipated was that a series of a paintings would come from it. I decided to submit the best of three and so 'Breathe' was sent on it's way to Edinburgh ...

And then I discovered I wasn't limited to one painting. So 'Breathe II' was submitted.....

That was it or so I thought until today when I finished the third one and a decision was made to send it with Breathe II to Edinburgh. Hopefully it will mean a few more trees! There are several more to come in the series but they're not intended for inclusion in the project......

Choice now has to be made between these two versions of 'Breathe' as to which to submit for 'Trees For Life' project....shame I can't submit both! The title was inspired by a lyric 'breathe to make me breathe' from the song 'Breathe' off the album 'Breathe' that these were painted to ....as trees are the lungs of the planet seems apt. Unfortunately even with the camera still haven't got a digital image that captures the colours and vibrancy.

Foreground may need tinkering with or better still cropping but if I do that it won't meet the size criteria! The title comes from a lyric 'breathe to make me breathe' from the song 'Breathe' off the album 'Breathe' that it was painted to .... given that trees are the lungs of the planet the title seemed apt. Can't upload or print the flyers off for the exhibition seemingly but here's a wee taster of what will be included. Any voice art featuring Midge's face that's included will of course be to help raise funds for Save the Children ...just trying to find a way to do it that shows the donation was made.... a 'Just Giving' page perhaps. Not much painting done in past week as I've very busy revamping the website and preparing stuff for the upcoming exhibition. Mounting, framing, sealing, pricing, labelling, packing etc etc takes ages and that's without all the printed stuff, sorting insurance, press release, flyers etc....the 'to do' list just keeps getting longer! Hopefully it will all be worth it! Looking forward to getting back to actually creating art though! And needs must as gallery space coming up in June.

Lots of silver and copper metallic paint on texture gel but can't quite pick up the effect on either scanner or camera. The standing stones are painted in a mix of violet & silver on texture gel and though one can't easily see it from these pics there are engravings on the largest stone.

The Midge Effect

Part 1
Seeing Midge live in concert always gives me much new inspiration but I've come back from the recent trip to Scotland with rather more than I'd bargained for this time. Not the first time by any means but still didn't expect the direction things would take. Feel as if I've been given a kind of 'spiritual' kick up the backside in the nicest possible way!

So much for saying I'd stopped doing the 'voice' art with Midge's face in ....loads have been inspired/triggered since I said that last Sunday!!! That's me told then! I'm realizing how much I'd missed doing them ....just need to speed up my painting pace to keep up as they tend to take rather longer than the other stuff and larger ones can take weeks. (He was still in a good few pics just in more subtle ways!) Also, need to stop worrying about whether I can do Midge justice!!! Those pics aren't about portraits, they're saying something......

Here's the first off the drawing board, by no means perfect but hopefully says what it's meant to say! Good to be working with more colour again too. It's a mixed media collage on heavyweight watercolour paper using watercolours, acrylics, ink and texture gel and far too much PVA glue for my liking!

Africa Mosaic (working title)

Art is my 'voice', my way of putting positive vibes out there and it seems I've been given a nudge to get back on track and do more of the 'voice art' again which along with the experimental stuff and the abstracts should make for a more interesting year and redress the balance with the ambient art. So I'll be doing as 'told' and going with the flow regardless of other considerations from now on! And if the Africa focused ones can help raise a wee bit of cash for Save the Children it's all to the good.

It's also reminded me that, even if not so commercial as the ambient art, it's the voice art with Midge's face in that has got me exhibitions, got me press and drawn folk's attention the most at exhibitions and may even have helped raise awareness in a small way. Sometimes you get distracted from what you're really meant to be doing, what's really you and what matters most ....back on course now though. So it's not only many more hours going deep into his music but hours looking at his face then ....no great hardship there!!! ;-)

Part 2

It's no secret that I consider Scotland to be my spiritual home and in particular the Scottish Highlands which are so deeply embedded in my psyche and where the sense of having lived there in previous lifetimes is incredibly strong. The forests, the hills, the lochs, the rivers, the skies, the wildness ...all in my heart and soul. There are tales that could be told about that, experiences that I've had but some things go too deep for sharing in cyberspace. Spiritual links to other souls are often so much stronger than blood ties ... after all they have lasted across the eons of time and space. This can be equally true of our links to places. I've got no sense of connection to the area where I grew up but jeez Scotland exerts a strong pull.

So even if it's not to the Highlands any chance to go back to Scotland is taken. And everywhere I go there is a warmth and generosity of spirit in the Scots that seems to be sadly lacking south of the border. Getting off track! Sorry! So this trip took me to Dumfries and Kilmarnock, places I'd not previously visited. Good to explore new territory though Dumfries was surprisingly familiar in some ways but that may be because I'd had an astral wander there a week or so earlier or possibly I'd visited in a previous lifetime. I did the Burns Trail taking in The Burns Centre, Burns House, Mausoleum and a couple of long river walks and here are a few of the pics...

A mixed media abstract on heavyweight paper using watercolours with a salt effect for the background. The structure is painted in prussian blue acrylic with prussian blue acrylic ink for the spirals. I was woken up more than once to sketch out a loose rough of this structure so I gave in and painted it! It'll be interesting to see what if anything other folk get from it! And for that reason I'm not going to share what I get from it! ;-)

Portal is a mixed media collage on deep edge canvas using watercolours and indian ink for the centre, and many layers of acrylics, metallic mixes and texture gel for the rest. It's taken days to get the colours and texture as I wanted them and I could carry on tinkering ad infinitum no doubt.

Initially I did write about what was in my mind, what inspired this but on reflection I think it's best left open to imagination!

'Textures' is my first abstract on canvas. It's also the largest abstract I've done. And the first in acrylics. My preferred medium is watercolours but 2011's challenge is to experiment more with acrylics, with textures, with mixed media, with collages and to do a lot more abstracts.In the last week or two with a little help....ok a lot of help from the music, from my Muse there has been a flood of inspiration flowing again.

Textures  was painted in acrylics on deep edge box canvas. The flowing 'streams'  are textured using texture gel to give them a rough stand out surface  loosely based on  branches though they are more to do with tendrils of  energy.They've been painted in a mix of prussian blue, deep violet and  silver. Multi colours were used for backgrounds between the tendrils.  Metallic silver and copper applied by fingerpainting. Other metallic  mixes by brush. Edges of the canvas are painted in dark violet, blue  & silver mix.

The second pic was taken in a corner of the 'studio' environment. It's hard to capture the metallic effect or texture on camera unfortunately!

A mixed media painting using acrylics, watercolours & indian ink on 300 g/m paper. Could the style loosely be described as 'expressionistic' pointillism!? You may not be able to see from the pic but the star is a mix of purple, violet and magenta. Kind of stating the obvious to say that positive energy and hope for peace in the world was on my mind!

A painting that started life as a watercolour last year but didn't work the way I'd intended so I abandoned it. Unusually Instead of ripping it up I put it to one side. When it resurfaced two days ago I decided to totally rework it using acrylics to bring in the colour and energy that it needed.

I love a wide range of music but it is very rare for music other than Midge's or Ultravox's to inspire or trigger a painting. 'Sound of Waves' is one of those rarities! Sadly Mick Karn died last week and in the wake of that this painting was triggered by his beautifully atmospheric music 'The Sound of Waves'. Thank you Mick!

Reflecting on 2010 I'd say it was an interesting year, maybe a bit of a rollercoaster but certainly a year to remember! Some fantastic highs thanks to Midge and Ultravox and all those live gigs....re-energizing and inspiring me. A year of opportunities, of exploration, of experimentation, of inspiration, of the unexpected!
It's music and my muse that inspires my paintings but the peace and quiet, the solitude that I've lost by moving into a town and that I miss so much, the yearning for solitude, for remote sparsely populated places away from noise and air pollution has also been evident in my artwork this past year.

Moving forwards into 2011 I'm looking to build on the increased sales of last year and to do more promotion work online and find more outlets further afield since the area here is so lacking in galleries and other venues. Exploratory trips to places such as Liverpool and Chester are being considered. I also need to get more traffic directed at my website, this blog and the two Zazzle stores.

In february I go to see my muse so no doubt will come back with loads of creative energy and inspiration again! Which is great as the focus at the moment is creating new work for the Nantwich exhibition in May/June. Beyond that I'm hoping for more space in the Art Studio gallery this year. Looking further ahead October is booked for the Lyceum exhibition though certain practicalities may intervene.

So where am I headed artistically? Well the flow of the mood/ambience Eden art continues and the lure of the standing stones and trees is as powerful as ever but there will also be more abstracts and experimental stuff. And more guitar paintings. Hopefully some acrylics. Challenging myself and pushing the boundaries. Several tryptichs definitely. More digital artwork for the zazzle store I've just set up.

Unfortunately as usual the scans have not picked up the colours correctly. The crimson and magenta are much deeper and far more vibrant on the original.These started off as a much larger painting which didn't work as intended so rather than waste all the time and energy that had gone into it I decided to crop the top half of the painting into a trilogy. In cream mounts together they work so will be sold as the Crimson Trilogy. Each one is sized at 17.5cm x 12.5cm mounted.

A commission based upon the song lyric 'when crimson takes a hold' has so far triggered these two efforts. Struggled with this because the song the lyric is from triggers strong images that go against the criteria for this commission. Not used to going against where my Muse is taking me!

Another Midge inspired painting...the title comes from song 'I see hope in the morning light'. The owl is flying through the darkness looking for hope but also seeking the doorway to other worlds.......but it's also very much open to individual interpretation!

These were triggered by the extraordinary energy I experienced at last friday's gig and painted in the afterglow.The tree and the background on 'Remembrance' are both symbolic of the lifeforce, the energy that emanates from My Muse and that I 'feel' on all levels. The title comes from one of his songs...felt apt as trees are not only silent witnesses to past, present and future throughout their lifespans but also are sometimes planted in remembrance.

The idea behind this one was twofold. Firstly the need to protect the elephant and their habitat. Additionally the elephant is known for it's strength, patience, intelligence, telepathic abilities, gentleness and grace, strong family bonds and so many emotions such as love, joy and rage but they are also known for their long memories so I've depicted the african elephant in this painting to help me convey the trail of memories we have as individuals and as a race and the need to know/understand where we've come from to know where we are going.Trees are also witnesses to past present and future albeit silently so african trees in it too.

The dove in this one is symbolic of the spirit passing between two worlds and Callanish is the doorway between those worlds. The background effects are intended to give it a kind of surreal astral atmosphere.The title comes from the song 'Let it Rise', a collaboration between Midge and Schiller. Unfortunately the scan doesn't reflect the vibrancy and colours adequately.Might have to try and photograph outside when light conditions are right to see if I can get a better image.

The Power of the Voice ...

The creative doorway that Midge opened in 2005 inspired not only artwork but also several poems and a lot of other writing. Having come across some poems today I've decided to share a couple of them.

The following poem was written for the children of Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso in 2005 but it's just as relevant today when we have countries such as Ethiopia, Niger and other African countries in crisis because of droughts and famines caused by climate change that we in the West have played a major part in. Originally I dedicated it to Midge, Bob and others who care enough to make a difference.

Now I'd like to dedicate it to the folk who've made me ashamed to be British, those who think we should scrap or cut international aid and just focus on our own problems! They have no idea what real poverty, real hunger and thirst is like and should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for being so selfish and utterly lacking in compassion. The contrast between the generosity and compassion for those less fortunate in other parts of the world shown by the Scots to the lack of it down here in England has been so disheartening. We also have Pakistan in dire need of assistance but I've seen posts saying we should only look after our own ...anyone with that attitude is no friend of mine and I won't be slow to walk away from such folk. We are all part of the global village ...compassion doesn't have borders!

I ask why does it take so long to send them the aid they need?

So swiftly does the West raise funds to wage war

And move its supplies across the world,

With its killing machines.

Tell me the reason!

Fathers trying, mothers sighing, children crying, babies dying,

Locusts scouring the land eating all in their path

Drought parching the earth as crops fail

And turning all to red dust.

How many more to die?

Did we not listen?

The worst famine in a decade is about to hit West Africa

Are we again to watch the children die a slow death?

And see the faces of those without hope of life

With a dignity we would not have.

Knowing their suffering only through the TV news,

As Big Brother evicts its latest.

I used salt in wet washes to try and get a kind of otherwordly energy bursts effect. Some will know which song inspired this one. The two birds are golden eagles ... feel so privileged to have seen these majestic birds in the wild in the Highlands. The eagle is symbolic of inspiration, of spirituality, of strength, of the spirit soaring high and so much more. The painting has much deeper personal significance for me but there are no words....and besides it's best to leave it open for folk to see what they get from it!

Started off with usual background washes into which a leaf was pressed to get an 'ethereal' imprint .... add the tree, a solitary merlin and those Old Men of Callanish ...result 'Phase'. I've used a mix of black and silver on the stones to get a shimmery effect since the whole thing is about energy phasing in and out, crossing dimensons...energy from both the physical world and otherworldly. The merlin represents our spirit making use of the energy from the planet, from the Stones and from other dimensions...

Another abstract in the sequence series relating to the paths and angles that life can take, the random and seemingly chaotic sequences ... some may know what music inspired it! You can be flowing with the tide (dolphin) or rising above one's emotions to seek new paths and angles. And sometimes you can soar above it all (merlin). Tree is symbolic of steady growth as a spirit as we traverse these paths and angles and branch out down new pathways.

Having been asked to do a commission inspired by the Ultravox Lament album & Callanish I've been immersed in three songs from the album ...One Small Day, Lament & Man of two worlds on a loop. As always happens with this album the Muse is flowing freely ....so going with the flow and going to paint all the pictures I've 'seen'! It'll give a bit more choice anyway. A particular view of the Old Men has to be worked from and there must be four birds to represent the four members of the band. Here's the first one....

The birds used in this are merlins. Being hawks they're not birds that flock but I often use merlins in paintings for various reasons so artistic license here...individuals that sometimes come together! There is much symbolism and mythology attached to the hawk. The hawk can be a messenger...it also represents the heavens, power, royalty, nobility and in ancient Egypt was considered to be the Spirit, the soul, the inspiration. So not entirely inappropriate to use them to represent the mighty Ultravox!

I've used the raven to represent the guys in this one though I think the ravens should have been smaller so might have to redo this and the other one I'm working on! In North American Indian tradition various qualities are attributed to the raven including change in consciousness and it being symbolic of magic in the air, of something rather special being about to happen.....

The birds are merlins. The guitar is based on the Gordon Smith GS1 which Midge used during the RTE2 tour. The arch represents the door that opened for the band and for us all with the reunion. The willow branches are symbolic of being drawn to the band, the music, the gigs......incidentally the willow is said to have protective qualities.

None of the scans are as good as I would like...the originals are more vibrant and the scanner really doesn't scan orange well!

Not done much painting in past few days as I've been too busy marketing,framing, mounting, labelling etc and writing an updated bio. Anyway 14 paintings now hanging in the Art Studio Gallery in Newcastle ...good opportunity that I'm rather pleased about ...the opening I'd been looking for ever since we moved to England. And tomorrow another 14 of the smaller ones go on exhibition in Crewe Library throughout July ...not the best place for sales but it's exposure! With the work that's in galleries in the Highlands and Islands it means that most of the available work from the Eden & Astradyne Abstract Galleries will be out there somewhere so I'd best get creating more and very soon!
